WJXT / Channel 4

For my senior internship I interned with WJXT, Channel 4 The Local Station. I mainly went out in the field with the reporters. Through going out with the reporters, I learned how to cover breaking news, conduct interviews, do stand-ups, put together news packages, and what to expect in my first reporting job. The WJXT reporters taught me the ins and outs of the news business. They were so impressed by my work that they actually started letting me be a reporter on the weekends.

On the weekends, I got to go out with a photojournalist and cover different events. I would write questions and then conduct the interviews. I also would record a stand-up. I would then go back to the station and write a package on the events I covered. By writing my own package, I was able to get feedback from every aspect of the newsroom. I would send my packages to reporters, anchors, and producers just to get different perspectives from the business.

I also worked with the producers and assisted in producing a newscast. They would give a story and I would turn that story into a script for a show. I also worked with the web team where I created stories for the News4Jax website. I was also given access to the WJXT Facebook where I tasked with responding to messages from our viewers.

I wrote this story based on a comment we received on one of our Facebook posts. Emilie Yeauger, Dolores Meng's granddaughter, asked for our help for her grandmother's 100th birthday. This post actually got a lot of attention on all of WJXT's social media.

This story was my idea. I saw post about Kimani Burton on Facebook and I was curious to hear his story. I reached out to him and asked for an interview and I am sure glad I did. This is the story of how Burton went from being homeless to giving away two scholarships.
